Professional Development Developing High Performance Work Cultures, held on Friday 5 October 2007.
Thumbs up for speaker Colin Chodos!
“Fascinating, illuminating and very high energy……….Fantastic & really good to see a session for senior managers……. Amazing speaker & great detail…. Really good ideas on how to empower a team …Excellent presentation. Incredibly valuable”
Colin Chodos, Managing Director of CCS Behavioural Specialists gave ACT MEA members the inside on how to create high performance work cultures on 5 October at the Brassey Hotel. Eighteen executive level members attended the session which covered a number of strategies that senior managers could employ to develop a culture of employee and customer satisfaction and loyalty in their workplace. Given the current labour shortage in our industry and the common complaint of businesses finding it difficult in retaining good staff, this session was highly sought after.
The feedback from this session was overwhelming. So much so, we may run another full day session in 2008. If you are a senior manager and want to suggest another PD topic for the new year, please email your suggestions to act@mea.org.au.

Professional Development "The A-Z of Green Events", held on Tuesday 23 October 2007.
Did you know that climate change is currently threatening the world’s ability to feed itself, to supply fresh water, to control disease and maintain the direction of the ocean flow and severity of weather? Were you also aware that Australia has the highest per capita emissions of greenhouse gases in the world today?
With frightening facts such as these, the MEA ACT committee thought it was about time to put our green foot forward and lead the industry to change! And what better presenter to show us the way than Jeremy Garling of Great Southern E-vents, a strong advocate of all things green and Director of an events company who has achieved the status of accredited Low CO2!
Armed with his Green Policy checklist, Jeremy Garling presented an informative and eye-opening professional development seminar at the National Convention Centre on Tuesday 23 October. Jeremy covered a number of helpful tips all with the aim to reduce, re-use, recycle and offset. The NCC also showed their green support by hosting us in their refurbished Swan room that used natural light, catered using local & organic produce for afternoon tea, and made sure not to use plastic bottles or disposable crockery. To top off the afternoon, the BDM of the Convention Centre, Michael Waters, gave our delegates a special all-access tour of the newly refurbished NCC.

Y MEA Trivia night at The Argyle Cellars on Thursday 15 November 2007.
Our younger members came together again for a Y MEA Trivia night held at The Argyle Cellars. Filled with 80’s and 90’s questions and their industry knowledge was also put to the test, the winning team took home adrenalin jet boat rides thanks to the Ocean Pirate. Also special thanks to Oz Management and AV1 Audiovisual Productions.

ClubMEA A lunch with a difference was held recently at the Elephant & Wheelbarrow English Pub in Brisbane. Meg Miller from Sabre Corporate Development presented “Nexus – the networking game” and had everyone scrambling to complete jigsaw puzzles, unlock padlocks, and complete questionnaires. The Elephant & Wheelbarrow set the venue and menu with an Italian theme, with more antipasto, pasta, cannelloni and desserts than the guests could eat in one sitting!

Professional Development "The A to Z of Going Green", and the National MEA Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday 13 November 2007.
“Excellent presentation,” “Excellent speakers,” “Excellent location.” Our TAS MEA membership had nothing but positive feedback after attending our recent professional development session in the Riviera Room at Wrest Point on Tuesday 13 November. This highly rated seminar was thanks to our guest speakers Annabel Davis from Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Elizabeth Rich from Agenda Pty Ltd and a special introduction to the topic by Tasmanian Senator Christine Milne.
Our panel of experts provided attendees with a current view of climate change in Tasmania and the need for our industry to take action now! This was followed by a case study of SCEC’s Green Globe accreditation and then a workshop for attendees allowing our members to look at their current green practices and what they can do in the future to make their events more sustainable.
After a delicious afternoon tea from Wrest Point, our members regrouped for MEA’s National AGM chaired by Annabel Davis, in which our board presented on the financial activities for the 2006/2007 year.
Our next MEA Tasmania event will be in early 2008 – for any program details please email tas@mea.org.au

ClubMEA Networking at Subiaco Oval, held Wednesday 31 October 2007.
Over 50 MEA WA members networked at Subiaco on Wednesday 31 October, enjoying afternoon drinks and canapés whilst overlooking the stunning views of the famous Subiaco Oval. In keeping in theme with our gorgeous location, BBC Entertainment kindly sponsored Glen Jakovich to present to our members on his most memorable moments playing at Subiaco. The Eagles star, having played in three AFL Grand Finals and 2 Premierships and being awarded Club Champion four times, was an inspiration to our attendees, highlighting the value of teamwork in any organization.
The event also allowed our Branch Committee to report on the financial MEA WA activities for 2006/2007 and introduced new members for the next year. This ClubMEA was our last networking event of the year, with the exception of our Y MEA launch in December – a networking opportunity for Y-generation members (under 27 years of age). For information on Y MEA or other upcoming WA events for 2008, please email wa@mea.org.au.
